Caesar crosses the Rubicon

On January 10th, 49 BCE Caesar led a legion across the Rubicon, the small stream that marked the border of Cisalpine Gaul. “The die of cast” he famously said, knowing he was breaking the law. As Caesar approached, Pompey fled Rome despite superiority in numbers. On March 16th Caesar entered Rome unresisted and unarmed.

Full disclosure, I may occasionally borrow a sentence from Will Durant's Story of Civilization. I absolutely love that collection!
