Alfred Wegener's Pangea

In 1915 Alfred Wegener published his book ‘The Origin of Continents and Oceans’ (link) in which he named the early continent as "Urkontinent" the German version of "Pangaea"—which is derived from Ancient Greek pan gaia or “all lands”. He was ridiculed for it. His redemption came four decades later in 1957 when Marie Tharp and Bruce Heezen published their first physiographic map of the North Atlantic

Full disclosure, I may occasionally borrow a sentence from Will Durant's Story of Civilization. I absolutely love that collection!
